We're sitting in the German farmhouse, watching Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure.

Today's plans got a bit sidetracked when Sandra got carsick because she's coming down with a cold. We stopped in a parking lot of a building supply store, and joked about buying a teeny cabin to put on their property. Sandra felt okay enough to tour but not up to another hour of car travel. We couldn't get to the castle that they wanted us to see. Instead, we spent the day at another castle in another charming town, and it was great. Then we took a hike in the woods to see the ruins of an old refuge from the Huns. What remains is two walls, the outer built by Celts and the inner built at medeival times, a moat between the two. The remaining fortifications were gone, as they had been built of wood, and an unpracticed eye might have missed them all. In fact, an unpracticed eye would never have known to wander into the woods. It was twilight when we wandered into the woods (yes, there were all kinds of Blair Witch jokes). I would have loved to wander a bit longer, but darkness was falling (more Blair Witch jokes).

Sandra is obsessed with mushroom hunting, so we were scanning the woods for fungi - with no luck. We drove back here, and Sandra jumped out of the vehicle and opened the garage.

Something lumpy and white laid on a blanket just inside the garage. Sandra gasped, pointed at the lumpy pile, and turned to glare at Wolfgang, still in the car. I wondered for a moment whether something had died there, when the door of the house opened and Wolfgang's father stood grinning madly.

The pile was a ton of mushrooms, and the outrage was Sandra's defeat. You see, Wolfgang's parents and our friends have a friendly competition for the first mushrooms of the season. Sandra and Wolfgang lost.

But we won. Sandra helped clean the mushrooms, then sauteed a great pile of them with bacon, onion, and vermicelli, and accompanied them with potatoes from their own garden that were the best potatoes I've ever eaten.

Now we're sharing a little something back - Dave Gorman. I miss our friends back home, but I'm also sad that tomorrow is our last day here.
