Car update
Oct. 15th, 2005 11:41 amSo, when I said my car burnded up, I was apparently a lot closer to the truth than I realized.
ferrett took it to the shop yesterday and when the mechanic called he said I was really lucky. Apparently there was an actual fire, which burned up the cables and torched the insulaton and melted part of the underside of the dashboard. Usually when they do this, they actually catch fire and burn. He had no idea why this one didn't, except for luck.
Ferrett told me all this, and my mind went galloping off into all that alternate universe what-if-ing that happens when you find out that you had a much closer call than you ever imagined. I was picturing conflagration, me leaping from the car. And then immolation. And having stupid thoughts like, would I have had time to grab the bag with my laptop in it off the back seat?
In a matter of minutes, I had worked myself into a full-blown case of the shudders, imagining the adventures that did not happen. And then I had to make myself stop. It's easy to paralyze myself with what-ifs.
Still...
[shudder]
