Tempest in a starship
Oct. 28th, 2005 01:40 pmThis morning on the front page of yahoo I read that Star Trek's Mr. Sulu, George Takei, came out.
My reaction: "Huh."
I didn't know; I hadn't ever really thought about it. But I regarded it at the same level of information as "Catherine Zeta Jones has navel piercing:" a piece of information I didn't know about the celebrity in question that's just one more bit of their personality.
Imagine my surprise and perplexity when I found that a full 25% of my flist appears to be linking to the news story.
Is it just me that news about people's sexuality is pretty much insignificant? I've searched my heart, and I really don't care one way or the other whether Mr. Takei prefers the company of men or women in his bedroom. My impressions of him - from the small screen and from the one time I met him - remain the same: a gentle man with a warm sense of humor.
To me, it's simply not that big a deal. As long as people are not engaged in behaviors that endanger unwilling or underage victims, I really don't give a damn what they do in their bedrooms.
Maybe that's weird of me.
