We are now staying in a lovely German farmhouse.
Wow. Wow wow wow.
wolflady26 and her husband, Wolfgang, picked us up after a mercifully uneventful flight yesterday* and immediately took us into Regensburg, a spectacular Bavarian town along the Danube. I was embarrassed by my lack of knowledge about the town - it was, after al, the seat of the Roman Empire in Germania. Bits of Roman columns with celtic knots are visible in the crypt of one of the churches.
Churches. Oh my, the churches. We spent much of the afteron church-hopping through breathtaking churches, moving from Baroque to Gothic to Rococo and back again. We spent much of the day staring at ceilings and gasping in awe.
I am amused, however, that our first German meal was actually Indian, because of the time we arrived, and our first drink was in a bar that is a bit of a medeival reenactment that is actually located in a medieval building.
Our hosts have been delightful, and we are having a great time. We slept under deep eiderdown quilts last night. Now we're off to take a six-mile hike to an1100-year-old monastary and brewery. Let me say once more, WOW.
*"uneventful" meaning that we only had to get to the airport 3 hours before the flight and stand in queues for a significant fraction of forever and then endure the screams of a dozen hungry, bored, sleepy babies who'd been deprived of snacks, toys, and favorite cuddlies. But we were only half and hour late landing, so I have no real complaints.
Wow. Wow wow wow.
