I just got a letter from a law school I didn't even apply to offering me a $14,000 a year scholarship for all three years. That is essentailly a full-ride scholarship, tuition and books and miscellaneous expenses. Sweet, thinks I, but what's the catch? I go online and investigate.

Seems that this college was just denied accreditation by the ABA. Graduating from an unaccredited law school is paying $75,000 to be a paralegal--sure, you may pass the bar, but you're not gonna get a job. ABA's problem with them appears to have been a disbelief that they can actually attract student body.

So their answer appears to be to make a big bet. They are offering scholarships to people who look like they will a) hang in there and b) make a good showing. Essentially, they're offering an unholy alliance: they'll make me a lawyer on the backs of the students who will come after and I'll make them look good. We'd both be betting that enough others will take the risk for us to impress the ABA and gain accreditation before I graduate.

Nice try, guys. I hope it works out for you, I really do....
