This morning, someone responded to my diatribe about noisy kids in restaurants with a nasty, anonymous comment, the standard insult fare.

I can't help but be amused at my reaction to same: "Hate mail?! Coool!!!" To me, hate mail just means I've hit a nerve.

Living with [livejournal.com profile] theferrett and reading some of the vicious invectives hurled at him over the years has, to a degree, inured me to the damage that such comments are intended to inflict.

But a lot of it is the sophomoric content of the comments. They generally amount to: "You're wrong! And you're so stupid you should die! And you're fat, too, so nyah!" That's not an argument; that's throwing plastic toys in the sandbox. You think telling me I'm ugly because I'm fat is going to hurt me, coming from someone who hasn't managed a cogent counter-argument and who is too chickenhearted to sign a name?

Dude, it's the pen that is mightier than the sword. Not a crayon.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA. That's the best thing I've heard since "whatever. next time use a pencil"

But...but...

I like crayons sometimes. They've got this whole nostalgia thing going for them. It's fun to make out the grocery list in crayon because then it looks pretty!

Was it annonymous UKTroll that seems to so love Ferrett's journal? Because that dude is hillarious to screw with.

On review, it seems that perhaps it *IS* UKTroll, unless UKTroll has inspired a copycat.

I hope that you replied with either proper verbal raspberries or so eloquently that they have to use a dictionary to look up the words they used.

People like that: Two words - no class. If you want to spark an argument have the balls to sign your name so one knows who they are retorting to!

Bah! Cowards!

I haven't always agreed with your hubby but at least when I didn't, I tried to say why.

Generally, I'd be in meltdown & unable to, though. :-|

As for your last post, I dislike undisciplined little brats, too.
When James & Brad were young, we went places where they wouldn't misbehave or there was somewhere they could play without annoying anyone. That or they didn't go out with us.

I peeked out of curiosity, from the tone and use of the metric system, it's probably the "hob" chowderhead.

Now I'm wondering if Hob Chowderhead has kids. There seems to to a be a correlative relationship between bad parents and how upset they get about any criticism to parenting ability. It's like they believe there's a consensual reality where there is nothing you can do to raise a well-behaved child and as long as they don't here otherwise they can pretend it's true. Thus, ANY mention a parent is responsible for their child's behavior is a direct attack to them.

Or Hob Chowderhead just sits and reads journals all day, insults at hair trigger readiness, looking for something, anything, he can use as a tenuous justification to fling his poo. Poor Hob Chowderhead.

Amen to that. Because I'm a parent, and I don't get upset about such things. Some people ARE bad parents.

Gini....this is why I heart you so. So very, very, very much.

I agree with you that the random trolls just show you've made it in the blogosphere. The only time I can think of, that this bothered me, was in relation to your hubby's journal.

I had written a comment in his journal one night, when I was in bad shape, and way doped up on meds. Around the same time, I had written a very personal and heartfelt post in my own journal.

A couple of hours later, I went back and re-read what I'd written in [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's journal. And I realized that what I had written was so poorly phrased as to be nearly incomprehensible. So, I commented on my OWN comment, and mentioned that it was terribly written.

I went to bed, and when I got up a couple of hours later, a bunch of spineless idiots had come to MY journal, and commented on how poorly written MY post was. They picked out sentences that to this day, I can find nothing grammatically wrong with, and blown them to shreds. I mean, I guess it's a compliment to your your hubby that he has un-solicited minions, but it bugged the hell out of me.

Ferrett totally defended me, saying that it was stoopid of them, and (this is the part I thought was WAY cool) that if I HAD thought his post was terribly written, I had the right to say so.

It wouldn't have gotten me so much, except that it was such a personal post I'd written in my journal. But, that is the danger with posting publicly. Also, it would have been nice if they were blasting me for making a point, instead of them being too dumb to realize that I was responding to MY OWN COMMENT. I didn't touch a nerve because of what I said, but instead because of who they thought I was criticizing.

Yeah, I don't encourage people to go into the journals of others ("Fly, my winged monkeys!), but it does happen on occasion. It is the hazard of a public journal.

OK, so what does 'you're fat' have to do with anything? What a lame and pathetic insult. Are we supposed to run off crying just because assholes they tell us we're fat and ugly when they disagree with our opinions? Well, fuck that. It's the oldest trick in the book when it comes to putting women down.

I'm fat and yet I can wipe the floor with brain dead shrimps like this because, oddly enough, despite being fat I'm still intelligent. Shocking, isn't it...

And the crayon line is just priceless, Zoethe, I must try to remember it.

"Hate mail?! Coool!!!"

That's always been my reaction - I kinda miss having an open blog. Hate mail has always put things in perspective. I may be having a crummy day, but at least I'm not the sad bastard who goes trawling the net looking for things to hate.

I miss my old nemises. She found out that I have CHD and a close friend of mine was deaf and set out on a crusade to make us kill ourselves, because, y'know, only normal people are allowed to live. She then threatened to kill us, at which point my friend tracked her IP number and threatened to set the police on her. Probably a good time to get rid of the psycho, but at the same time... I miss the funny!

I've gotten the "Oh yeah? Well you're fat and ugly!" response many a time. And then there were the CF people who called my house and threatened to murder my children. They're great fun, too!

Welcome to our dumbed down American society, where "You're fat!" is considered scathing witticism and words of more than one syllable are elitist snobbery.
