The refrigerator seems to have experienced a spontaneous healing.

This is not a behavior you generally see in a major household appliance.

Before anyone assumes that it was something I did, let me just note that it is one of those sealed units where you can't vacuum off the coils. I did suck dust from beneath it, but the motor and fan have been running all along (I didn't unplug it because the air circulation helps to avoid mold). After I pushed it back in place, I noticed that the freezer unit seemed colder, so I chucked an icepack in there, just to see. Sure enough, it froze up.

Problem is, the refrigerator part does not seem to be getting very cold. I am not convinced that this isn't a last hurrah, but it amused me, so I thought I'd share.

If it lives, I'm gonna start advertising myself as an appliance faith healer.

Once upon a time, my college roomie and I were driving down the major highway toward our job. As we were poor but honest college students, we worked for a fast food place and her car died in the center lane during the height of rush hour traffic.

We got out of the car and jiggled things under the hood and the car refused to start back up...

Finally, realizing that we were now about to be late to work and without the advent of cell phones, we both glared under the hood and she decided to try it one more time.

I hollered out "WAIT! I have an IDEA!"

And I stood before the car, raised my hands and then made the sign of the cross as I uttered the following words "My father plays dominos better than yours can."

She turned the key and the car started.

Congratulations on the freezer. After all, ice is more important than eggs or milk.

Fridge is now working.

Feeling a bit better, though wary of getting to enthusiastic. I may go for a walk, but I know better than to let myself get on my bike - I have no self control and will ride 24 miles give myself a setback.

Our freezer attempts to die pitously every summer, then miraculously resurrects itself when defrosted. Unfortunately we never seem able to think ahead and defrost it before it starts complaining.

Damn, I should have got you to look at my freezer while you were over. It's ill, possibly terminally. It only freezes the shelves, not the content.

Bummer. But you can try this: empty everything out of it, clean it well, and then tip it forward. Apparently jiggling can sometimes release an air bubble that is keeping the coolant from moving.

My car did that once. We were in desperate need of take out (we'd been drinking, of course we needed lovely lovely greese) and my car was the only one there. A '79 Sunny and she hadn't started in about 3 months or more but we thought we'd give it a shot. Low and behond, it turned on and ran like a dream. Better than I've ever had it go before. Even the radio decided to click in (It's never worked in the whole time I've had the car). and the ride was smooth as anything. Of course, the next day, she wouldn't start and even after getting her completely serviced and looked at, she's never run as good as that night.

Just for safety's sake, I'd invest in a new one; it could be that the fridge could have died during a power surge and then restarted, but if it's a leak in the coils, you're better off getting a new one.

Just a thought, we had the same thing happen at work. The fridge up and died on us. Now me being the cheap resourceful guy I am, I tinkered with it for a few minutes. All this really meant was that I reached into the fridge and cranked the coolness knob up to the highest setting and then shut the door. A few hours later it started cooling things again. What I learned (later) was that a great deal of older fridge's that have turn-style knobs often get cranky if the temperature hasn't been changed in a while and will eventually shut off (for whatever reason) and that this is a warning sign that the fridge is going bad. Is your fridge the type that has a turn-style knob to adjust the cold level? Because perhaps that is the case.

As of this morning, freezer is freezy and fridgeis cold. It's probably on its last legs, though.

Perhaps while you were gone and the AC was off, too much heat built up outside the fridge for it to be able to counteract? Now that you're back and the house is a more normal temp, the fridge can manage to cool again? Or maybe you just have a new power! Awesome Appliance Resurrection!

Probably there was a bubble blocking the coolant, and my jostling it around released it.

Our fridge did this intermittently for a bit before we gave up on it. I think fridges do this as they wear out. (I did not have anyone attempt to repair our refridgerator because it was about 20 years old, the interior was cracking, and it was generally clear that it needed to be replaced.)

Ours is pretty old, too. We may just go ahead and replace it, but if we could jolly it along for a month or two while we pay for the trip, that would be A Very Good Thing.
